General Objective
SOWISE+ – Solid Organic Waste Into Sustainable End-products aims to demonstrate, at industrially relevant scale, a first-of-its-kind multipurpose biorefinery that transforms urban waste streams into valuable bio-based materials and products.
The project combines two complementary waste-valorisation pathways:
the conversion of urban biowaste into polyhydroxyalkanoates, with a particular focus on PHBV;
the recovery of high-quality, virgin-like cellulose from post-consumer absorbent hygiene products, such as diapers and incontinence products.
The PHBV and recovered cellulose produced through the SOWISE+ flagship biorefinery will be used to develop and validate new bio-based materials and products for applications in packaging, 3D printing, agriculture, healthcare and construction.
By integrating municipal waste management, biotechnology, materials science and industrial production, SOWISE+ will demonstrate a scalable model of urban-industrial symbiosis that reduces dependence on fossil-based and virgin raw materials and supports Europe’s transition towards a competitive circular bioeconomy.

Impact & Results
SOWISE+ will demonstrate a first-of-its-kind multipurpose biorefinery at industrially relevant scale.
The project aims to:
process around 16,500 tonnes of urban biowaste per year;
produce around 230 tonnes of PHBV annually;
recover up to 700 tonnes of high-quality cellulose per year;
develop new bio-based materials for packaging, agriculture, healthcare, construction and 3D printing;
reduce dependence on fossil-based and virgin raw materials;
support new circular value chains, jobs and industrial opportunities;
assess the replication of the SOWISE+ model in other European regions.
