PACE
Potato juice to fatty acids for new bio-based value-chains in Europe
General Objective
The general objective of the PACE project is to demonstrate a first-of-its-kind, full-scale retrofitted biorefinery that uses novel fermentation and microbial chain elongation technology to convert potato juice, a currently underutilised sidestream from potato processing, into sustainable medium-chain fatty acids (MCFAs). These bio-based chemicals can serve as renewable alternatives to fossil- and oleo-based ingredients used in sectors such as detergents, fragrances, animal nutrition, and specialty chemicals.
By applying circular bioeconomy principles, PACE aims to maximise resource efficiency, minimise waste generation, and unlock new value streams from agri-food processing residues. The project contributes directly to Europe's Green Deal objectives by promoting sustainable production systems and accelerating the transition towards a climate-neutral and resource-efficient economy.
ena's Role in PACE
ena Development Consultants leads the project's communication and dissemination activities, ensuring that PACE's innovations, achievements, and results reach relevant stakeholders across Europe. Through strategic communication campaigns, stakeholder engagement activities and digital dissemination tools, ena supports the effective transfer of knowledge and maximises the project's visibility and impact.
Furthermore, ena contributes to the development of exploitation strategies that facilitate the future uptake and market deployment of the technologies developed within the project, strengthening the project's long-term sustainability and contribution to the European bioeconomy ecosystem.
Impact & Results
PACE will demonstrate the technical, environmental, and economic feasibility of converting potato processing sidestreams into high-value bio-based chemicals at industrial scale. The project is expected to reduce waste streams, improve resource efficiency, create new circular value chains, and decrease dependence on fossil-based raw materials.
By validating an innovative and scalable production pathway, PACE will support the growth of Europe's circular bioeconomy while contributing to environmental sustainability, industrial competitiveness, and the development of greener manufacturing processes.
