ena Development Consultants enters the Horizon Europe 2021–2027 programme through its participation in WHEATWATCHER, a highly competitive European research and innovation project focused on sustainable agriculture, soil health, and safe wheat production.

The European Commission announced the evaluation results for proposals submitted under the HORIZON-MISS-2023-SOIL-01-03 call, with WHEATWATCHER – Safe Wheat Agriculture Towards Sustainable Health: Innovative Sensing Techniques, and Holistic Spectroscopy Traceability for Improved Soil, Plant Health and Safe Wheat Grain – being one of the two proposals approved.

The WHEATWATCHER project, in which ena Development Consultants participates as the only partner from Greece, will run for four years. Its main objective is to develop and implement an integrated monitoring system for assessing soil nutrient status, as well as the chemical and biological factors that affect and/or contaminate wheat, from field cultivation to flour production across different regions of Europe.

This system will provide a decision-support and management tool for farmers, mill owners, and policymakers, helping to safeguard food quality and safe production.

ena’s Role in the Project

ena Development Consultants leads the work package dedicated to the design and implementation of a strong communication strategy for the project, ensuring that its results and impact are effectively disseminated to key target audiences.

In addition, ena will oversee the creation and operation of a pilot site in Greece, where variations in soil properties across cultivated land will be monitored using cutting-edge sensor technology and computational models.

A European Partnership for Sustainable Agriculture

WHEATWATCHER is coordinated by Ghent University and has a total budget of €6.3 million. The consortium brings together leading universities, research centres, technology providers, and innovation organisations from across Europe and beyond.

Through this collaboration, the project aims to support the development of advanced tools that improve soil monitoring, enhance wheat quality, and contribute to more resilient and sustainable agricultural systems.

Supporting Innovation Through Horizon Europe

The approval of WHEATWATCHER marks an important milestone for ena Development Consultants, strengthening the company’s participation in European research and innovation initiatives.

Through its role in the project, ena continues to contribute to the green and digital transition of agriculture, supporting innovative solutions that address food safety, soil protection, and environmental sustainability across Europe.
